Underwater Horror, and I’m Not Talking Fish Tanks Pt. 2

Posted by on 31st December 2009

The underwater horror genre is often one of the most terrifying because the situations and terror often come from being trapped in a small confined space underwater as well as the fear of being cast out into the dark, forbidding depths. Man has always been fearful of the water due to our inability to survive for long in it and our incapacity to breath on our own underwater. There will always be something mysterious and frightening about the dark, menacing depths of the ocean and the strange untouched and never before seen terrors that lurk in the darkness. Here is a list of movies that deal with the horror of the underwater and may just make you think twice about that scuba diving trip or fish tank purchase.

DeepStar Six

Similar to the plot of “The Abyss” and released in the same year, “DeepStar Six” is about a group the struggles for an underwater military outpost to survive after being attacked by a mysterious being. Directed by Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham, “DeepStarSix” didn’t have the budget to create anything as big and exciting as “The Abyss” but the film succeeds on its own terms as a fun little b-horror monster flick for those who aren’t a fan of Cameron’s cinematic excess. The rubbery looking killer crustacean monster isn’t very well done, but it makes quiet a bloody entertaining mess as it chomps on the crew.

The Evil Below

Yet another underwater themed horror picture from 1989, this obscure little film has a few horror elements but is largely an adventure film about a sea captain looking for treasure in a wrecked Spanish boat that is rumored to be cursed by ghosts and monsters. You really don’t see anything horrible besides a small death and a little blood caused by a mysterious something but then throughout the film you never heard about the supernatural killing ever again. If you like to look at decent shots of underwater life I guess you can check this bad movies out, otherwise just watch National Geographic.

Below

Mixing the war, underwater horror and supernatural thriller genres together and you get “Below,” an often overlooked film by David Twohy and co-written by Darren Aronofsky. A British hospital ship sunk by Nazis is known to be haunted so it is obviously investigated and when a souvenir from the ship is brought on board another ship, supernatural and eerie events start to happen, including deaths and murders. Twohy would go on to direct the great Chronicles of Riddick films “Pitch Black” and “Chronicles of Riddick.” His most recent film is “A Perfect Getaway” starring Milla Jovovich and Timothy Olyphant as an American couple lost on a remote beach in Hawaii.

Underwater Horror, and I’m Not Talking Fish Tanks Pt. 1

Man has always been fearful of the water due to our inability to survive for long in it and our incapacity to breath on our own underwater. Here is a list of movies that deal with the horror of the underwater and may just make you think twice about that scuba diving trip or fish tank purchase.

Leviathan

An undersea mining goes horribly awry when the group of minors find a safe from the former crew of a Russian ship in the deep sea. The crew find a flask of vodka, and after two crew members share the drink they become horribly sick. One of the crew members dies and the other one slowly begins to mutate. The mutated bodies come together to form a horrible creature that begins to murder the surviving crew one by one. As each member dies it begins to mutate and forms with the monster that gets bigger and stronger. The movies is an OK take on the sort of close-quarters alien survival movies like “the Thing” and “Alien” but the special effects and horror aren’t done as well as they could have been. It’s a decent little late 80s horror movie to check out if you are into deep sea horror.

The Abyss

James Cameron’s epic science fiction horror film finds the crew of a new, experimental submersion machine investigating a mysterious submarine crash that may have been caused by an alien species unknown to man. As is common in many of these claustrophobic underwater films, there is a member of the crew that becomes increasingly paranoid and violence, making the human element often more dangerous and terrifying than the alien element. The film was a large budget and difficult production with the crew spending days in a giant seven million gallon water tank for filming. Much of the underwater filming was also done in the largest underground lake in the world located in a mine in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

There are No Poker Chip Sets in Space: A List of Mars Themed Films Pt. 1

Posted by on 31st December 2009

The planet Mars has always been a mysterious place but because of its closeness to the earth and highest likelihood to have once been habitable to a race similar to our own, people like to conjecture about Martians or unseen forces on the planet. The look of Mars, with its giant, dry valleys, and its terrifying volcanoes and craters is fun for directors to recreate in cinema, which is probably one of the reasons why there are so many films about it. Here is a list of a few notable films about Mars many of which involve being stranded on the planet, not a poker chip set or rescue ship in sight.

Mission to Mars

The director of “Scarface”, “The Untouchables” and “Mission:Impossible” went into space with this science fiction film about a rescue mission sent to mars after a disastrous manned voyage to the red planet. The story of “Mission to Mars” is decent enough but De Palma is unable to make the film very exciting, despite a few gripping scenes at the beginning and middle. The final twist climax is startleingly similar to that of “Contact” which makes the ending fall flat. De Palma is a talented director but “Mission to Mars” is not his best film, evidence that he should stick to the sort of films he is best at, namely mobster films and political action thrillers.

Red Planet

Val Kilmer and Carrie-Ann Moss star in this science fiction film about a mission to colonize Mars after the planet Earth is overpopulated and polluted, making it uninhabitable for many people. The film is applauded for not turning into just another Mars monster picture but is instead more interested in portraying the attempt to survive in an inhospitable atmosphere when it seems like all is lost. “Red Planet’ often tried to bite off more than it could chew, mashing together too many ideas than it was possible to sustain. There are many interesting ideas in the plot of “Red Planet” but none of them are giving full reign in the scattershot script. A pretty big flop on its release, Anthony Hoffman has not directed any other films since “Red Planet,” which is too bad since there are some interesting ideas and glimmers of talent in the film.

There are No Poker Chip Sets in Space: A List of Mars Themed Films Pt. 2

Ghosts of Mars

The once great John Carpenter directed this pretty awful film that borrows too heavily from the “Pitch Black” series and nameless other science fiction/horror films. Ice Cube stars as the Mars criminal James “Desolation” Williams who is awaiting transport to a more secure jail. They find that the location of the jail is a desolate wasteland, and has been haunted and ruined by the ghosts of recently undug spirits from the planet’s long lost warrior race. It’s a ham-fisted and silly plot that isn’t helped by poor acting from Ice Cube, Jason Statham and the usually great Pam Grier.

Stranded: Naufragos

Starring the always interesting and controversial director and actor Vincent Gallo as well as too-pretty-to-be-hidden-inside-a-space-suit Maria de Medeiros, “Stranded: Naufragos” is an interesting entry into the stranded in space genre. New comer director and actor Maria Lidon tries hard to make the film less of a horror film than a psychological look into the minds of the stranded survivors as they await what is sure to be their eventual, slow death. A rescue ship is due in 26 months but there isn’t enough oxygen or food to survive that long. There is a silly alien “reveal” n ear the end that doesn’t fit with the film and really the only reason to see this is for the small cameo the late Johnny Ramone makes as a crew member who makes it home.

The Best Milla Jovovich Films to Watch When The Kids are Asleep In Their Bunk Beds Pt. 1

Posted by on 31st December 2009

Born in Ukraine, Milla Jovovich started out in modeling from a young age and for a long time wanted to be a singer. She released one album in 1999 called “The Divine Comedy” and got her first major role in “Return to the Blue Lagoon” a provocative romance adventure film based on the original Blue Moon film starring Brooke Shields. She has since gone on to star in a number of films, from big budget action films to under-the-radar independent films to comedies like “Zoolander” and “Dummy.” Here is a list of a few of her best film roles to watch when the kids are asleep in their wooden bunk beds.

The Fifth Element

The big breakthrough for Milla Jovovich, in “The Fifth Element” she plays the role of Leeloo, a human looking alien who is also the fifth element needed to save the earth from the destruction of the Great Evil. Gary Oldman plays the great Jean-Baptiste Emmanual Zorg, a wealthy industrialist working and influenced  by the Great Evil to bring about the planet’s destruction. Bruce Willis is a taxi driver who gets involved in the plot to save the world after Leeloo, running from her captors, falls through his taxicab roof. Milla made her introduction to many in her now iconic white-bandage outfit that she wears throughout the film. Milla’s role as Leeloo was praised for her acting as a often frightened inquisitive method style, which she said she picked up after studying the movements of birds.

The Million Dollar Hotel

Mel Gibson, Jeremy Davies and Milla Jovovich starred in the film by Wim Wenders based on a concept story by U2 lead singer Bono. Based around a number of eccentric characters who live in a Los Angeles hotel that is brought to its knees by an investigation into a wealthy man’s son’s mysterious death, Jovovich played the role of Eloise, a smart, complicated prostitute who is the love interest of the slow but loving Tom Tom. Gibson plays the FBI agent investigating the apparent suicide who comes face to face with his own demons as he tries to solve the case. A highly underrated film by the wonderful German director Wim Wenders, the film was subsequently bashed in interviews by star Mel Gibson, who called it “boring as a dog’s ass” even though he was so excited about the film that he waived his usual star fee wage to work on it for much much less.

The Best Milla Jovovich Films to Watch When The Kids are Asleep In Their Bunk Beds Pt. 2

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc

This retelling of the legendary story of Joan of Arc, the French war heroine and religious martyr is played about as well as one could by Milla Jovovich. With an all star cast of Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway and John Malkovich, “The Messenger” should have been a bigger hit but critics were hard on the film, criticizing the use of modern idioms and the inaccuracy of the battle scenes, nonetheless, Jovovich does a great job as playing the slightly crazy, but religiously fervent Joan, who believes that God is guiding her actions.

The Claim

For some reason, no one saw this underrated gem from English director Michael Winterbottom (“Wonderland”, “A Mighty Heart”, “9 Songs”) despite it being one of the most beautifully shot, directed and acted movies about the California Gold Rush of 1849. Jovovich plays a brothel owner and mistress to the town’s de facto leader, the film delves into connections between a newcomer and his wife and the other powerful town residents, all of which are looking for wealth and happiness. One of Jovovich’s last great drama roles before she become more known for her action film roles in “Resident Evil” and “Ultraviolet” she shows herself to be a very good actress if given the right roles.

Life Painted on a Display Easel: Top Three Michael Winterbottom Films

Posted by on 31st December 2009

Michael Winterbottom was born in Lancashire and is considered one of the most prolific and respected filmmakers directing sixteen films in the past thirteen years. He began working on British television before making the transition to film. Winterbottom is a humble artist and rarely speaks about his persona life but would rather keep the focus and attention on his films. Here is a list of the top three Michael Winterbottom films that are often considered works of art like that shown on a display easel.

Wonderland

Winterbottom highlights the life and travails of the British working class in this award winning drama from the acclaimed director. A married couple with four grown children deal with the daily stresses of life and their children’s lives as Britain prepares to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day in “Wonderland.” Molly Parker plays an early role which would show her versatility that she displayed in other film and television roles like “Deadwood.” Although she is not British she plays the role very convincingly. “Wonderland” was shown at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival and almost took home the most coveted award.

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story

This comedy film-within-a-film features Steve Coogan, who starred in Winterbottom’s other memorable film, “24 Hour Party People.” The film is about actors trying to adapt what is essentially an unadaptable 18th century novel called “Tristram Shandy,” about a man attempting but failing to write his autobiography. The film thus is a film about failing to make the film. It’s not as complicated as it sounds and is robustly funny with Steve Coogan playing his despicable self.

A Mighty Heart

With possibly the biggest budget at his disposal and a big name American actress, “A Mighty Heart” was poised to be Winterbottom’s big breakthrough, and although it received rave reviews for both Jolie’s portrayl of Mariane Pearl, the wife of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and killed by supporters of Omar Sheikh in Pakistan and the film itself, it did not do well at the box office, but I’m sure Winterbottom is used to that. After people originally criticized Jolie for portraying a biracial woman, after seeing the film most agreed that Jilie did an admirable job.

Serial Killers, Heists, Paintball Guns and Giants Snakes: Early Owen Wilson Film Roles

Posted by on 31st December 2009

Check out these early Owen Wilson movies, serial killers, heists, paintball guns and giant snakes, the best of his early years.

The Minus Man

I don’t think anyone in the world has seen this movie. Owen Wilson stars as a serial killer who goes after people who seem unhappy in their life, including singer Sheryl Crow in her first film appearance. Those who have seen the movie say that Owen Wilson does a good job as the lonely serial killer on a mission. Wilson’s role and “the Minus Man” succeed at being a interesting character study but not as psychological as the film thinks it is. It is too bad that very few people got to see Wilson shine in this underrated film.

Bottle Rocket

This first role for Owen Wilson also starred his brother Luke and was directed by Wes Anderson, who would go on to work with the two of them on nearly all of his pictures. This charming picture is about a group of aimless men who plan on pulling off several robberies and heists but they get distracted when Luke Wilson’s character falls in love with Inez, a maid at a hotel in Texas. The group gets in a number of scrapes and one final botched heist that is a hilarious rush to watch.

Anaconda

Yes, Owen Wilson was in this classic snake horror film with Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight and Ice Cube as Gary Dixon, the soundman for the documentary team that is going down the Amazon River in search of finding a long-lost Indian tribe but instead find a huge, record breaking anaconda that proceeds to terrorize and kill the production team. I don’t remember how Wilson’s character dies in the film, I think he gets ingested by the anaconda somehow in a humorous way.
